Hi all,
I am picking up 2 calves that are Angus/Galloway cross. 4.5 and 3.5 mo old bulls. The people are moving and need to get them out of there. They are on the cow now so I don't think they will take a bottle. both eating hay and grain. Any tips for weaning and how long before I call the vet...
Here are two of my latest projects. A smoker/grill and a 3 ton grain bin.
Testing the smoker, inside rack is 4' by 6' with a side burner so you can cold smoke. It held 100 deg. for 4 hrs. on 4 little chunks of maple.
All it needs is a paint job and a new tire. And some MEAT in it!
3,000...
If you can find a good source for bulk grain you can make your own feed grain, and even save on alfalfa. I got a chipper/shredder from harbor freight. (the gas one) It works like a hammer mill. Also get a cement mixer and you are set. 4 five gal buckets of grain and 5 lb of Milk Plus pellets. I...
I was moving my sow to wean the 5 week old piglets, got her in the 4x8 trailer, easy, she finished the food she was eating, she looked at me and jumped out of the trailer. 32 inch high rails. Her teats almost drag the ground but she cleared the top rail from a standing jump. 400 plus lb pig...
I am taking the piglets off the sow this week. They will be 6 weeks on Friday. When should I put the sow back in with the boar. She is looking good, lost a little weight but she was a little heavy to start.
My other sow had 12 today. So far so good, I don't like crates but she was being very rough with the first 2 out so I put her in it. Now I am going out every 2 hrs to let them out of there warming box so they can eat. It took here 12 hrs to pop them all out, only had to jump start one of them...
Betty my sow is good with people but now she is getting very protective of her piglets. I can be in the farrowing pen with her and rub her belly but I went to move a piglet and had to climb over the railing to keep from being trapped in the corner. I'm a fat man and don't like to climb anything...
My sow Betty Boop farrowed on the 17th. She had 14 total, 2 still born, 2 I think got laid on, and 1 unknown, but got 9 running around. They were all about 3lb with 1 runt at 1lb. It took about 6 hrs for her to pop these out. I got a new camera on the way so I can get some better picts, but...
Has anyone made or seen or have pictures of a pig tractor? Like a chicken tractor, only much, much stronger. I am going to make one to keep my boar in.
Update: with picts of new pig tractor.
When moving animals over state lines who generally pays for the vet certificate, the buyer or seller. Is there anything else I need to know? This is for moving pigs but could be applicable to other herd animals.
Also was not sure where to post this.
I want to fence a pasture area that has a small river that flows on two sides. I the summer it lowers to about 16" deep and 12' wide. Anyone know if pigs will try and cross the river. Will they try and jump down a 6 to 8' bank. I always had pigs in a pen never on open pasture.
Can it be done? How hard is it? What equipment is needed? Where do you find semen?
I have AI cattle years ago but I don't thing goats will be the same.
I have been trying to work up a recipe for pig feed using what I can get in my area. But I do not want to use corn or soy.
protein parts
Wheat, white and red 16% x3
Peas, yellow and green 24% x1
lentils...
Anyone have any idea where I might find a grain grinder for feed. I don't want to make flour. Or if anyone might have an idea how to make one. I have a metal/welding shop but I cant find a picture of what the inside looks like, or any other ideas.
Has anyone had a dog that ate goat droppings. I have a 4 month old 50 lb German/Antolean (sp) shepherd. Not a LGD but he wants to be. Just cant keep him out of the poop, chicken poop also, and feed and even hay. And yes I feed him 3 times a day, about 12 cups a day. This is at 13 weeks.
