Thanks for the warning! Hadn't factored in the twisting. I'll raise it up so they can only reach the bottom of it and not get their heads in it. Hopefully that will hold them until I can get their drum feeder made next week.
For that much milk, a couple small goats like Nigerian Dwarfs or even one of the mini breeds (Standard breed X Nigerian Dwarf) being developed would work well. I believe the taste of the milk changes a bit depending on breed and feed. We chose Nigerian Dwarves for our family in part because...
I got this http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/tough-1-deluxe-large-poly-hay-bag to use in my quarantine pen for my two new (ND) bucklings. So far it works great. So great in fact I may actually have to go buy bedding since the waste amount has been so little. Holds about 1/4 of a square...
Hello again! Long time no see. Herd is up to a whopping 4 Nigies now. :) Hoping to double that number in the next 6-8 months. Excited about our first venture into breeding but totally freaked out about it too. Plan to do DHIR testing this year and into next and linear appraisal next year...
Just a note to say hello! Hope everyone is doing well and all the kidding is delightful and uneventful! Seems to be the year for bucks but I still managed to get two gorgeous little doelings reserved. :weee (THANK YOU SOUTHERN!!) Very excited!! They should be weaned and ready to be picked...
OUCH!! Hope that heals quickly!!
Yes, it's an 8x8 brick square with a window and door on one side. Right now they have a cedar tree we cut to fit inside there, but I'm planning to replace it to free up some floor space. I don't remember exactly how much linear roosting space the tree...
Thank you. That's by far the best my front yard has ever looked.
My kids are torn between loving it and hating it. One wants to be out rolling around in it 24/7 and the other (younger) wants nothing to do with it. I'm with the younger one there. Much prefer to enjoy it from...
I have no experience to share - other than that Southern and Elevan and the rest on here are excellent teachers. I am interested in hearing your experiences though since I'll be going through this myself in the future.
He is too precious!! I about fell over laughing when I got to the one of him meeting his new family. The goat boots are great! Your daughter is a clever girl!
Is your fenced area more grass or brush? I can't speak to temperament but if it's grassy, sheep will cost less to feed. If it's brushy, then goats.
Also, for that amount of pasture you'll get more bang for your buck with the dwarf breeds. Plus they're cute as all get out, and easier to...
Can you clarify what it was you want out of the animals - meat, milk, fiber, lawnmower, brushclearer, pet, 4-H project....
I know nothing about sheep, and very very very little about goats but if you were to give that info it might be easier for those who do know to give a better answer. Good...
Raising livestock in a lot of ways is like raising children. It takes planning, research and a certain level of maturity before obtaining them to be successful. Your purpose is not to just sit back and enjoy the cuteness, but to get down and dirty in the poop, deal with illnesses and injuries...
Under preferences - options un-click the box that says "and receive emails..." It's the second box under the options tab there.
I *think* that should fix it.
We are currently more of a large backyard operation - but will be expanding over the years. We are looking to start an LLC for our "farm" related purchases/sales for a variety of reasons. But every good company needs a name before it can have much else. We are currently restricted to 2.5...
Agreed!! I don't have a farm yet so it's a moot point for me. As a purchaser and a future farmer it's easier for me to keep up with all the small farms I talk to on FB than to keep checking in on their individual websites. I think a FB with a link to your webpage is the perfect combination...
