Hello all! It’s been awhile since I’ve been on here but i thought I’d ask for any advice you might have on training mustangs, I just got my horse assignment for the colt challenge near me (I’ve included a picture and for some reason it won't let me add in the video.) any and all thoughts and tips are welcome. Hope your having a wonderful day :)

Check out Ryan Rose on youtube. He also has a patrion something or other but I don't know anything about that sort of thing. Not long ago he did a mustang challenge. You might pick up some really good tips watching that series. He's a really good trainer. I've trained all our ranch horses (and other sports) but haven't had the opportunity to train a mustang. Had planned on it years back. Can't wait to see how you do with this really nice looking mustang. Is he from NV?

I think he’s from NV, I knows he’s from the Lichfield pens which is right up next to NV but get horses from north-east Cali. So maybe🤔

What is involved in your "horse challenge" program? Rules? Do you keep the horse or break/tame/train and return? Interesting. It takes love, patience, determination compassion and time. Trust must be built. My heart horse was an amazing friend.

I know there's a prison where inmates are in a program to tame/train mustangs. It's a very emotional transition for horse and person. Rewarding and therapeutic.

It’s through the Devils Garden Colt challenge. We pick up our assigned horse in march and we have till August to have it halter broke. In June there’s a required video contest/ check in to see how everyone is doing. In August there’s an optional showmanship, halter, and obstacle course class that you can participate in for prizes. It’s a bunch of kids doing it so they give us the choice of keeping the halter broken horse or to put it up for auction.

Sounds like fun!

Update #1 3/3/26: I’ll be going to see my mustang assignment this Friday due to the corals being pretty close by, however I will be picking him up in late march. I was thinking about naming him Dimitri but I’m not sure yet. Also I’ve been working on cleaning a bunch of random tack that came with my family’s house and hasn’t been cleaning in like 6 years. I have a saddle it’s in good condition but there’s a bit of rust on the hardware, do any of you know of a way to get rid of the rust without damaging the leather? I’m planning on selling it so I can get the starting supplies for the assignment >:3

Update #2 3/6/26: so we were going to visit my horse today because the guy my mom talked to said we could just show up at any time between 7-3 mon-fri because someone would ’always be there’, but for some reason literally nobody was. So yeah, that happened lol😅. But on the plus side we went to tractor supply when we were in the area and I picked up stuff for the turkey chicks I’m getting tomorrow. As of right now my family will be (slowly) working on cleaning our barn for the spring (it’s a pain, iykyk) hope your having a good weekend!
