Hey all,
Nilla our dexter cow aborted a calf this morning. Does anyone got any ideas as to why? Her placenta was pale and it appeared avascular. I’ll take pictures of her placenta, if its still there, and post them when we get back (we’re moving cattle at the moment)
We’ve been feeding prairie hay and some alfalfa, nothing else that I know of.
The pasture that she’s in is pretty clean, no trash in there that we know of, if that helps.
We have a ton of deer around.
They should be up on most of their shots. We might send in her urine, or the calf or the placenta, we are going to ask our vet to see what he says as well.
Thank you!

What can you tell us about the bull that was used?
Do you know what vaccines were used and when the last time the cow got one?

Anyway, the short list is (in no particular order) :
1. Physical injury
2. Lepto.
3. Neosporia
4. Trich
5. Nutrition deficiency, particularly mineral related.

If you want a better determination from a vet or other medical facility, take the whole fetus to them. If not possible, as many of the following as possible:
chilled lung,
liver, spleen, and abomasal fluid;
an eyeball for nitrate testing;
formalin-fixed specimens of brain (even if soft),
lung,
thymus,
liver,
kidney,
spleen,
adrenal gland,
skeletal muscle (eg, tongue and diaphragm),
and placental cotyledon;
serum from the aborting dam; and
thoracoabdominal fluid from the fetus for serology.
