I am interested in acquiring alpaca to guard our backyard herd. From what you experienced herders know, are they all priced in the thousands of dollars range?

As far as price, it really depends on the area. You can get male fiber quality alpacas for $100. But alpacas really aren't guard animals. Most won't guard. You will get the one that doesn't like stuff in his pasture and will guard but they still aren't large enough to stomp a coyote or dog. A llama would be better but you still have to be sure and get a guard llama. Many llamas don't guard either.
