Alaskan's Journal

A pair of golden eyes ducks showed up. They never nest on my pond... my pond is about 10 feet too small for them to nest, but some years we have them for a week before they move on. They are highly sexually dimorphic, and the male is such a stunner.

Anyway... I think they were in the pond for only an hour, and then flew on... I am sure their feet got too cold.

Any who...... the ice on the pond has melted enough that we pulled the island back to shore and messed with it. I think we have it just right. A sheet of wood, on a pallet, is right under the water, for easy climbing on and off. And the decking of the nest area is just above the water line, so the nest is dry.

We filled the nest with hay and put it back into the middle of the pond.

I was dead asleep, but kept hearing something that sounded like car doors slamming.

So I finally woke up enough to get up and look out the window to see what was going on. I literally, for a split second, thought I was going blind/my vision was messed up.

Because all outside had glaring white areas.

:th

Yeah... snow.

The thumping was wet heavy snow falling off of things. 2 inches of slushy stuff. And then it hailed this afternoon.

Luckily, the pond wasn't frozen... that would have tipped me over the edge.

On the way home from my Saturday coffee group I actually stopped cut down a bunch of the brush growing too close to the road. Yes.. at the start of the work I was getting hailed on.

I cut stuff down and hauled it off the road. I kept reminding myself (mostly due to the GREAT advice of everyone on here) ... slow and steady, work smart not stupid, be more careful..... and it went great! I got done the SMALL MANAGEABLE part i had set for myself. We shall see how my body feels tomorrow...

And my friends at the coffee group were pushing me to get my knee scanned... time to figure out what is going on in there and what to do about it.
