G'day, its been our experience that you have to select for wool quality in the Downs type breeds,as it was said before their wool is most suited for socks, gloves and beanies, but hand spinners want 'clean fleece' and so if the sheep spend 3 or more months in the barn and come out covered in straw there will be 'few' willing takers.Although we paddock lamb at the end of winter we shear in the Fall and generally find the fleece is quite clean after the Summer/Fall paddock grazing...T.O.R..

Our sheep live in the pasture and og to the barn as they like so it stays pretty clean....worst they do is get hay chaffe in it from the feeder which we are re-doing some day. For now i think i might clean and card it into batts and then make a fleece filled comforter. My mom had one as a teen and loved it, said they are super warm.
