B To N most beef is grassfed with some grain in their diet and can be finished on grain (6 weeks) - you will have some nice beef to sell but you need to create a buss for your product.ourflockof4 said:No they don't really expect grain feed, they expect well finished cattle. It's hard to get a well finished steer on grass (but is possible) You can sell at auction, but you will sell at a significant discount from a typical fat cattle buyer.Back to Nature said:Do they expect grain fed? That's disappointing. Sounds like Craigslist is the best bet.
You will need to market direct to the consumer to re coop your cost.
It's difficult to explain the cattle market. I could go into more detail if you would like though.
Example- We are strictly grassfed here - no grain ever - its not hard to get a well finished Galloway steer on strictly hay / grass but its hard on your pocket because the steer will be around 28 months old when ready for slaughter - thats two winters. So thats our buss for a business "Strictly grassfed beef" and $7 a pound of ground allows us to make a living and eat healthy.
Our flock is so right about the fat controller at auction thats any auction anywhere - they clean up and my shaggy Galloways would go for peanuts there
You need to be in control of your product
Good Luck
