If I was trying to be a one stop shot for my few heads of cattle, what would be the best grains to grow to turn into animal feed? I heavily planted white/red/ and no bloat clover through the pasture. I was thinking some type of corn and possibly oats.

A: what type of corn would be the most cost effective for feed?
B: would all the space be better used as just more pasture with more legumes?

I am located in Western NC, so alfalfa doesn't grow well I am told.

Trying a little experiment this summer. Got a small bucket of white millet seed that they used to grow here in Oklahoma long ago for cattle, hogs, chickens and people. So for so good. Growing nice even in these very dry days. Hoping it will be a benifit for my chickens this winter. Planning on just leaving it right there in the field and cutting a few stalks and throwing them in the chicken pen. I am hoping this will greatly lower my winter feed bill.

To the OP: This all depends on where you live and what grains are more accessible than others. Corn may be the grain to grow, or if you live in more northern areas, barley, winter wheat, winter rye or oats may be best. Where I live, we grew barley to feed our feeder steers.
