Today one of our ewes broke out of the pasture when someone left a gate loose. (He who shall go unnamed) She ram up to the ram pen and in order to catch her, we let her into their pen. When our new ram saw her, he immediately proceeded to mount her. Her back end became bloody. We checked the ewe and it was not from her. Each time the ram ejaculated there was a dark bloody discharge on the ewe. We palpated the ram and extruded the penis. It was clean and normal on the end with all parts accounted for. Of course it happened after hours and the ram is eating, drinking, walking with no pain or fever so I’m not going to ask for an emergency call. Just wondered anyone’s thoughts on if the semen can have blood in it? Is there possible damage within the sheath? He’s a 9 month old Dorper ram and hasn’t been used. So maybe first time blood vessel damage? Thanks in advance, Michelle

He was ....how to put this delicately...probably a little over-enthusiastic and tore a bit of his frenulum. It'll heal without any problem and the experience will not deter him on the next occasion.

Never had THAT happen before! Isn’t it great to have BYH and all the great people here to come to the rescue? Now you don’t have to be scared that’s something dreadfully wrong and you can heave a sigh of relief.
