Boone, typical LGD, doesn’t like his feet touched. I have been working for a year trying to get him to cooperate with me for the dremel. As his nails continued to get longer and thicker I wasn’t having any success beyond letting him sniff it while running it and settling it against his leg but he wouldn’t allow me to do his foot. Finally, last night I had to resort to force. Randy pinned him on the bed while I did his LF foot. When we released him, we had a huge party and
lots of treats, praise and compliments.
Tonight I had to put on his e collar and pin him myself to do the right foot (Thats his hurt paw that I’m beginning to think I ran over with the wheelchair. I pray it is just badly bruised, not broken. He has a bad limp) He was upset with me but allowed me to do it.
I tried giving him hot dog slices for each nail (and lots of kisses, which he enjoys) but he refused them. He sullenly turned his head away from me while I carefully bent his paw back and held each nail still while using the dremel. They aren’t nearly as short as I would like but they are much improved and I am now going to do them weekly.
I finished his last nail, his tail gave a little wag, he turned his head back to me and he requested the hot dog bag.
We had another party. Fen and Gizmo were invited He’s strutting with a limp because he knows he’s a really good boy. He quickly wore himself out as the experience was very stressful for him. I think it will be better next time ( next week)
Nails and the gravel road are his kryptonite. He’s overcoming both!
