There are two breeds of pig I am considering for my farm and I have come across a very interesting situation... I recently visited a Berkshire pig farm. They are adorable and I really liked the breeder. He takes very good care of his animals and I feel that not only would I be getting getting good quality breeding stock, but I would also have someone to call if anything came up.
The problem is when I called the Association, the woman was disrespectful, very unhelpful and quite frankly has turned me off to the idea of raising Berks since I would need to work with her to have registered stock.
I haven't had the chance to visit a Red Wattle farm yet, but I had the polar opposite experience with their Association. The woman was sweet and helpful and gave me all kinds of advice and information.
I don't really want to decide on type of pig to raise based on something like who has the best Assoc. I really want to pick the best pig for me to raise (temperment and taste). What's funny is when I spoke with the Red Poll Assoc the guy wasn't wild about my idea of milking but he helped me anyway. His response solidified my decision about Red Polls but my interaction with him didn't make my decision.
