So, my two girls are having a visit from a very smelly suitor. I dried them off about 3 weeks ago and this guy came to visit starting this past Sunday. The girls are Alpine/Nubian crosses. How long will they need to be with the buck before they come into heat? Obviously I can't watch them all the time, is there a way to tell if the "deeds been done"?

The buck has been with my girls for nearly 2 weeks now. I have not "witnessed" a mating, but he certainly has been giving it a go on a regular basis. If the girls were not in heat when he came, how long does it take in the presence of a buck to bring them in? They seem fairly receptive to the guy, should I keep him another a week or so to be sure?

bucks can have markers put on them,

Sometimes you can tell by the scrappings and dirt on the does backs.

ofcourse, sometimes you witness the deed being done, depends on the doe and how long she stays in heat.

but you are right thinking that unless you are out their often it isn't always real obvious. We keep our bucks with the does for atleast three heat cycles, since we are breeding several.
