So, this is my calving thread to help keep track of things in the future, and it’s also just fun to post about calves 😉. My plan is to post daily updates in a couple weeks once we’ve started calving. I’m going to start by posting pictures of some of my favourites/some that will probably be first. These pics are all from today.
There is pictures of cattle reproductive parts, so if that bothers you please look away.
Baby, the bottle heifer. She’s 2 years old and this will be her first calf. She’s a Hereford and is bred to a black Saler. I’m guessing she will be one of the first heifers as she’s the most progressed in loosening of the rear end.

Selah: black angus x cow. Is 5 years old and this will be her 4th calf. (Wouldn’t stop scratching her neck for the picture). She is bred to a black Gelbvieh.

I really wanted to get a picture of her standing up to show you guys just how wide she is, but maybe later I wouldn’t get her up. She is one of our sweetest cows, always was so gentle and nice even before she liked being scratched. She’s had a bit of a rough go at being a mom, you’d think she would be more aggressive towards people but not at all! Her first calf was massive, and she needed help, and she just let us pull him out in the field, no ropes or anything. (And calf was fine). Last year same kind of thing. Big calf, she needed help and she let us come right up to help her, unfortunately the calf didn’t make it, but we did eventually get her to adopt a bottle calf from a friend that she raised well. So I really hope this year goes easily for her.
