This is Caleb.

He was adopted from the county animal shelter on November 12, 2025.

He's approximately nine months old.

After stopping by the farmers' market I went by the animal shelter to walk a dog or two, and fell in love.

He was listed as a collie/Aussie mix, supposedly, energetic, but listened well. We had a long walk, and I taught him that if he sat when asked he got scratched on his chest, neck, and belly. He learned quickly.

When I put him back in his kennel and stepped out, I placed my hand in front of his nose to discourage him from sneaking out. He grabbed my hand in his mouth, and looked up at me, like "Don't leave me". I wanted to take him home right then and there.

I knew I couldn't adopt until I retired.

Two more weeks.

I couldn't sleep, I kept thinking about the dog.

Sunday morning I texted a friend who has worked in rescue. She found a person who might board the dog for me until the 26th.

The lady (I'll refer to as "C") and I exchanged lengthy texts. She said she would board him if I adopted him, delivered him to her house, and pick him up by the 26th, the day I retire.

I resolved to call the shelter first thing Monday morning, see if they could hold him for me.

I didn't sleep well again Sunday night.

I called the shelter at 8:05am.

No, they couldn't hold him.
Adoption hours are 1:00pm til 4:00pm.

I couldn't leave work early that day, had a crucial meeting until after 5:00pm.

Tuesday? Oh, no, they were going to be closed for the holiday.

I continued to pray about the dog.

I left work at 12, came home to change, then headed over to the shelter. I was early, but I waited in the car until 5 minutes to open.

Went in, announced that I was there for "Duckie" (his shelter name), sure! Young lady started to take me to his kennel, thought I was there to walk him.

"No, I'm here to adopt him."

Her face lit up "You're adopting Duckie?!" She was obviously excited. I filled out the paperwork.

"You know he has a lot of energy?"

"Yes. I walked him on Saturday."

"Hey! Everyone! Someone's adopting Duckie!"

I got all his info, tags, small bag of dog food. They brought him to me, with a borrowed leash and collar. After a walk around the parking lot and copious watering of the bushes I placed him in the backseat, secured his leash to the seatbelt, and we left for Pet Smart.

One red collar, one red leash, and a training ("choke") collar later I texted "C", the lady who was going to board the dog, and headed for her house.

"C" is a little older than me, but fosters dogs. She said that my dog was probably still a puppy, 9 months to a year old. I found out as we talked that she's trained service dogs. It showed.

"C" has a large fenced yard, had me drop my dog's leash, and he suddenly realized that he could run! She let him wear himself down a bit, then brought out the most laid back of her dogs, a Walker hound. After some introduction she allowed the two dogs to run, repeated the procedure with a Yorkie mix. When he got over zealous, wanting to mount and play, he was corrected with snarls and growls, and he backed off. Then she put him in a kennel run before releasing her third dog, Pepper, who looked like a Rottie mix. That dog didn't put up with any foolery, and after being loosed again my dog learned quickly to not mess with her.

After things calmed down, some, we went inside with the dogs loose. We sat and talked while the dogs continued to get acquainted. He decided to chew on a dog bed, was checked with a sharp "No sir!" and he stopped.

I am very impressed with this foster lady. She'll be teaching crate training and housebreaking. And she thinks it would be beneficial for me to visit frequently.

I am so happy.

And now he has a name, Caleb. This will be his thread.
