Got a big white oak tree in the pasture and it has dropped thousands of acorns which the cattle are now eating even tho they have all the hay the want and about 4lbs each mix feed and cubes, as well as mineral supplement. They come to feed, eat their normal ration, then hay, then head for the acorns. I know deer and pigs eat them and get fat, but have always heard cows should not. They've been doing it for about 4 days now and I see no ill effects so far. Beef cows, not dairy and none are bred or lactating--if that makes a difference. I 'could' move them, but I don't have any pasture that doesn't have at least one acorn bearing tree on it. It froze here last 2 nights, and that usually turns acorns sour or bitter and even the deer and feral hogs won't touch them so maybe the cattle will stop as well?
Should I expect problems?
