Not sure if this is the right place to post this question, but if not, could someone direct me? I'm new to this forum and to goat owning.

When we got our Nigerian Dwarf goat kids about a month ago, the breeder told us that she had not given them the CDT shot, but she talked like it wasn't really necessary. What is the CDT shot and should we give them to our babies? Ours are around 12 weeks old now. They were nursing when we got them (around 7 weeks old). Like I said, these are our first goats and we want to make sure we are doing what we should to keep them healthy. Thanks.

Well firstly :welcome

Next the CDT shot in my opinion is a necessary step in preventative health care for goats. It protects against Clostridium C and D (also known as overeatting disease) also tetanus.

Your babies are old enough to have their first shot then it is repeated three weeks later and after that once a year as a booster.

The vaccine is too cheap and easy to fore-go given what the diseases can do! I give two boosters after the first vaccination (for goats) and then yearly, unless it is a pregnant doe. She'll get vaccinated a month before her kidding date so she has antibodies circulating when she births (for her) and in her colostrum (for the kids).

If your goats are mostly weed eaters they are less likely to get overeating disease but they still CAN, such as by eating all the springtime new growth.

You can also get an 8-way clostridial vaccine which affords a little more protection against more organisms. http://www.sheepandgoat.com/health.html has lots of articles about vaccine options. (scroll down)

If you can find a knowledgeable goat vet or breeder in your area you can ask them what you need to protect against for local problems. Personally I give covexin 8 and a seperate pasteurella vaccine.

Thanks for the responses. Where do you purchase the CDT shot? Our local feed store doesn't sell it.

You can order from Jeffers online. They have one from Colorado Serum that I use as it seems to have less of a reaction. I have one line of goats that are really sensitive to injections and these seem to sting less.

We went to Jeffers online and looked. Is it called Clostridium Perfringens Types C & D Antitoxin? Also, what kind of dosage is needed at one time? They show dosages for suckling goats, but ours are weaned. I'm not sure I'm looking at the right thing. Please help.
