I have an 8 year old female llama, a 3yr old, 4yr old, 8yr old, and a 5yr old. I dewormed them on July 10 and followed up on July 14 and now their poo is clumping again. The 8 year old female may be pregnant, due in March 2013, no one else is pregnant. I also have a 3yr old, 12 yr old, 5 yr old, 6 yr old, and 2 yr old male alpaca. They also need worming I have current weights on them so I need to deworm them. I have Valbazen, Synanthic 22%, Panacur, Ivomec, and Safeguard paste. Which should I use and how much should I dose? Should I do injection or oral? If injection IM or SQ? When should I follow up? How often should I deworm?

Every 6-8 weeks Ivermectin as IM/SQ. Do not use Valbazen on the pregnant one, especially right before she gives birth.

Are you sure you're not giving too much grain for the clumping? And is it like dog poo clumps or a clump of berries?

Christopher, I'm new to alpaca and I did worm them, but I started with a fecal so I knew if and what I might be dealing with when it comes to parasites. I definitely don't feel confident enough to advise you but our resident alpaca consult, Karen, will hopefully be along to give you a detailed answer.

I would think that if your animals share the same space and are housed together, once you know, you will have to treat the entire herd. As far as how often an animal should be treated is determined if they are needing to be wormed and not on a calendar schedule. Excessive treating may result in parasite resistance to antithelmics.

Welcome to BYH!

It really would be best to have a fecal done and find out what worms you are dealing with. Different worms call for different dewormers. Alpacas and llamas easily get coccidia as adults that needs to be treated so you could even have coccidia and none of the dewormers you mentioned will take care of that. Ivomec you want to inject with alpacas/llamas. I always do SQ.

You don't want to do regular deworming unless you are doing Meningeal Worm preventative. That would be injecting Ivomec every 4 weeks or Dectomax every 6 weeks. I used to just do M worm preventative from September to January. That is when it is usually the worst. You are taking chances the rest of the year but you don't want the parasites to become immune to Ivomec either.
