Good Morning, I am ISO a Dexter cow that has a baby and is pregnant with another. I want to raise them for the beef. There is no one selling them in the NE area. I can't find one east of the NY/CT line. Please let me know if you have any for sale. thanks,
Larry

I’m way down here in Texas. I don’t raise them, but about to buy a steer next month. If they are that hard to find, maybe you would do better with a couple of heifers and have them AI’ed?

I understand, but I want to offer something different then what others sell around here.

I didn’t mean change breeds, I meant to buy heifers to start your herd. A 3 in 1 might be harder to find versus heifers that you could have AI’ed, to get you started.

What about looking up the Dexter registry to find a list of breeders?

Couple of suggestions.... Try Riverbank Farms in NH.... they keep some Dexters... have working Austalian Shepherds too, I think .

Contact the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy .... I believe it is in NC...

American Dexter Assoc.....

You should be able to find them all on the internet...

Where in New England are you? Please put a state or an area in your avatar so we have an idea of where you are... you will see that most of us give a general area or state... helps with questions and answers...never know when you might find another member that is closeby to you.....

Great responses, I am in north east RI. 15 miles from the MA/CT/RI corner. I see a lot of great contacts. I am looking for 3. A cow that has calved, and pregnant. Thanks everyone. I will change my profile if it doesn't say I live in RI.
I have a trailer so I can travel to get one. I was going by word of mouth and the ADCA. They had none listed near me. All where 500+ miles away. I don't mind traveling or paying shipping. But I worry about the animals health.
Also, being in RI, I believe I only have Tuffs University for AI. Anyone else know of someone that services RI.?

Thanks again everyone.

Wow, your a fountain of information. I have sent emails out to several of these contacts. I should have said I was in RI, I am new to Dexter's, we had Hereford in the past. I tried the ADCA and had no luck, but I should have Craig's listed them. Don't care much for Craig's list, but I am willing to try. Just wanted to thank you for your help.

Have a great weekend.

Hello Baymule. where in TX are you? I bet your town is bigger than my whole state. LOL. It is tough to make a living farming here in rock laden RI. I am farming part time, I am a contractor by trade. We raised Hereford years ago, but everyone has them and Angus around here. I wanted something different. Thanks for you help. I miss reread your post, I read as Hereford, not heifers. MY BAD. but thanks again for responding. I have gotten more leads since I posted here than in the last 3 months of looking. I was relying on the ADCA and local farmers, but many have never heard of Dexter's. any way, have a great weekend and thanks again for help.

I am north of Tyler, Tx in both east Texas. Lots of cattle around here. I’m buying a Dexter steer next month to finish out for beef, up near Sulphur Springs. There is a Dexter breeder the next town over, about 15 miles from us. They are around here, just not conspicuous. LOL We are retired, have 8 acres, 3 horses, 3 hogs going to slaughter August 17, 19 Katahdin sheep, 15 chickens and 5 Livestock Guard Dogs.

I am delighted that you got so much help. Dreams do come true.
