After all my years of birthing sheep I have a new question to ponder. I had to pull a lamb today who was dead. Obviously had been dead for a little bit but not enough that things started to get funky. Will say though that it was odd her udder stopped enlarging the last 2 days and by today has actually shrunk. Ewe was having some discolored discharge in the last 24. Anyways my real mystery is that when pulled the lambs intestines outside the body from a hole between the back legs. I can't say for certain that it didn't happen when pulled but the lamb was not dead long enough for the tissue to decay. Otherwise, Lamb looked normal and was full term. Any ideas on what could have gone wrong? I haven't ruled out the usual diseases that cause abortions. Though we have a closed flock and no prior issues with any of these diseases. Unfortunately, the vet I need to take it to for necropsy is 4 hours away and closed for the weekend. Ewe has already received meds for comfort and infection as I'm certain this wasn't good for her. I know there is nothing I can do for the lamb I'm more concerned for my ewe's health and the rest of the flock. I have put that barn of sheep on quarantine and no other animals will come in or out till the issue is resolved. I have 3 healthy, easily delivered lambs already in that barn and 1 more ewe to birth soon.

Back legs, like, rectum/vulva or down further, closer to belly button?
Schistosomus Reflexus might be possible. Most cases are very severe, all born DOA, though.
I don't think I've heard of a lamb born with a prolapse, unless it was through the bellybutton.

More like testical if it had been male. Looked up SR and its intriguing. If so though it would be an extremely mild case. I agree with the prolapse comment. It also doesn't appear to me to be a true umbilical hernia but maybe a sheep version of an inguinal hernia?

I had a lamb born alive with intestines outside the body through the belly button. I put her down. No problems in the flock, no problems with the ewe, she went on to have lots of healthy lambs.

Haha, I should of just said genitals instead, as I meant all of those parts.
Inguinal hernia would be the testicle area, wouldn't it?
A really hard birth could squeeze intestines out from it if it was weak or faulty. I've heard of it happening if breech or lamb pulled out improperly.
