Who knew it would be so hard to come up with a farm name?! I’m thinking that should be decided first so I can then think of a herd name?

Who is good at this stuff?!? Helllpp!

A little bit to potentially help:

Our main goats are Pygmy’s (our kids also do market dairy goats for 4H.. Nubians)

We have 4 daughters

Our house/extra property is on a corner lot...

🤷🏻‍♀️

We can never decide if we’re being too basic or too extra when trying to decide this. 😬

Family name, name of road or area, name of type of farming you are doing(not goats, per se, but your methods~grass based, holistic, natural, etc. can give you some basis of descriptive names), or your dreams or goals~one place I've heard of is called No More Mondays Farm due to the fact they quit their day jobs and went to farming full time.

Too cutesy and folks won't take you seriously if you intend to sell a product, too plain and no one will remember it, too abstract and no one will know what you are doing there, etc.

Decide on the direction you are going and gear the name towards that direction....if it's a hobby farm, then give it a hobby/cutesy name. If a farm enterprise wherein you intend to sell a good product, give it a wholesome and serious name that possibly has a descriptor in the name~i.e. Green Pastures for grass based farming(an actual farm, BTW), etc.

Then, make up a description of what you are doing there, your goals for the farm, and a list of the names you've compiled thus far....then post them here in a poll, so folks can vote on them and maybe help you decide.

We definitely won’t be anything too crazy. The extent would be breeding our Pygmy’s. We strictly only have goats.

My farm name came from a combination of things. The 1st being my dog. When I got my Saint Bernard puppy I tried and tried to come up with a name for her. Usually I would name them after some trait they had, or trouble they'd get into, but she never did. I'd talk about her and tell people she was "as good as gold". Then it finally hit me, I named her AU, which is the atomic symbol for gold.

At the time I came up with I came up with my farm's name all my animals got along great. The dogs would run & play with the horses, my cow & my Great Pyrenees were besties, sleeping curled up with each other at night, I would let them all out on my lawn to graze on the weekends and never had a problem. A friend of mine said it wasn't right and called it Dr. Moreau's. That's when the thought took hold. I would call it Moreau's Farm.

In a way, the farm was more for my dogs than for me. They got to run the property every day. They got more enjoyment out of the rescue horses than I did. They loved to swim in the pond. Yeah, it was definitely more for them than for me. So that's how my farm got it's name. It is More-Au's Farm.

I hope yours is easier to come up with, or at least not as strange! Be sure to add some humor in there too! ;)

Our farm is Ridgetop and all our registered herd and flock names have been Ridgetop. One name is easier. The children helped to pick it for their registered ADGA herd name. We sit on the top of a steep ridge so it was very easy to come up with that.

Other people use a combination of first names for registered herd or flock names. Maybe arrange the first 2 letter of all the girl's names into something. It needs to be easy to pronounce and spell, especially since you will be registering your goats under it. Funny spellings can cause problems with the registrars and you don't want to be constantly returning registration papers for corrections. Especially just before a show! One nice thing about a herd name that is different from the farm name is that if you move to another location that might be completely different from the original, you won't have to change the herd or flock name.

We plan to move to Texas which is FLAT! Yet our registered flock name is still going to have to remain Ridgetop!

This was very hard for us too; we wanted something creative and unique to go along with the logo we're designing (a stained-glass look with sections for each of our different animals/products)...but we couldn't find a single-word, easy-to-spell-and-remember name that would describe what we're after. Plus, all our local friends advised us to just go with our name: The Olson Farm. It's the boringest thing in the world in my opinion, and we might still change it later, but we decided to stick with that for now. People already know our farm by our name, so this keeps it recognizable.

That said, in our search we did find a fun and pretty helpful "Guide to Choosing the Best Farm Names," which might at least get your creative juices going. :) Looking forward to hearing what you come up with!

This particular holler and the small stream that comes from it has been called Fox Run since anyone who is still alive around here can remember. Consequently, the private road to our place is also called Fox Run, so it stands to reason for us to call our place Fox Run Farm, just so folks can find it easily.

It also has a little bit of alliteration that makes it a little more memorable as well as having an animal for the logo that isn't dependent upon what we are raising here, so if we change up the type of livestock we are marketing, we don't have to change our logo. The running fox makes for a cool silhouette for the signs.

Easy to remember is always better. Since people know you, anyone asking directions to the farm are going to be told by neighbors "Oh yeah, the Olson place . . . . " Might as well stick with it. LOL The Logo sounds pretty.
