Farmerjan's journal - Weather

Ivermectin was vilified during Covid as a horse wormer. All over the news, idiots with no brains condemning ivermectin that was developed for HUMAN use in the 1980's. The cancer machine is a money maker, too much money for something like ivermectin take all that money away.
Very true and very sad...

The cancer centers (hospitals, dr offices, etc) around here are huge beautiful architectural building - lots of glass, steel, etc. Those don't come cheap.
Ya' know back in the c-vid days in India everyone was given iver - all got packs of pills. Makes one think there should be a study on the cancer rates there. 🤔

There are many studies, they won't get published, or they'll be pressured to retract. I worked almost 18 years in oncology, I know what I've seen.

During C0 vid I used to print out mask studies and post them outside my office door. I'm such a rebel! :D =D

@farmerjan I appreciate your animal husbandry that balances profit and compassion. A good bull or cow at the end of their lives are given the least traumatic dispatch...I admire that in you.

It's amazing to me how many cattleman especially still think iver is fake news for humans. There's a thread on CT right now that I've decided not to comment on. There's so many who choose to believe there's zero peer reviewed studies and evidence of success. It's truly sad because so many have had so much live saving results from it and other wormers.

@farmerjan The market prices are crazy right now! We got $1.55 a pound for that 1970 pound cull cow that lost her calf recently. She was obese so I didn't expect to get decent money let alone that kind of price. A very nice surprise. Never thought I'd see the day calves brought $6 a pound either. Pairs and bred's were pretty high yesterday too. Glad y'all did well!

That's why I kept telling you that she needed to go... because there is no way the meat is worth that if you aren't desperate to fill the freezer... and feeding her without a calf, is not an option.
I am so glad that you got some stuff sold and that the prices were good for you also. Most of our cull cows in the past couple months have been in the 1.40 to 1.65 range also... these last 5 were real good. Especially that young cow that did not breed back on 2 separate "tries"... and I did not like her confirmation... but if she was bred she would have stayed. Crazy .... over 2,100 for a young cow less than 1000 lbs.

Dropped the meters, went to town, stopped at Food Lion and went to the bank just down the road, then came home... Got the cold/frozen stuff in the freezer.
Hung clothes on the line. Ate a sandwich for lunch and then headed back to the farm to test. Got out of there and come back by snyder's... Put the cows in the barn with the calves,,,,I also got all the bags of feed into the cans... I had just put them over the gate into the barn Tuesday night... but no sense in inviting any ground hogs or coons to tear them up.... DS had taken a silage wagon up there earlier and took the other one out.,... but no tubs... called him and he said he was at a ball game, and would be coming back to finish up... here we go... drive 25 miles to a ball game for an hour, then all the way back to finish feeding then all the way back to her house for the night... Not my gas... but this is why things don't get done that he keeps talking about.
I got the 2 cows in and then the #28 black steer... and he will stay in now until he gets on the trailer. He won't bring top dollar due to the leg looking "big".... "puffy"... but he gets around pretty good and I am not putting anymore drugs/money into him... it won't hurt him that much... and it is better than it was before... Not going to sell the jersey steer now that the twin calf is on the cow at the barn that lost her calf...I want Maggie to keep up her production for a bit yet.....so 2 good sized calves is better than 1. One jersey steer calf is not going to make or break me either way.... DS said the twin sticks right with her everywhere she goes... I would like to see it up close... maybe tomorrow I will get by the farm and see if I see it on her... not going to turn her out with the other cow/calf pairs for a bit to make sure she sticks with this cow... and that it is getting enough to eat... plus she needs to get eartagged too. But at least she is following the cow around....and there are several animals in there, including the 2 calves off the cows we just sold...which will go Saturday also.

Temps hit 68 today... not too warm.. It was pretty comfortable... Breeze never seems to stop blowing.
Was watching the forecast... we are down nearly 4 inches for the year already... and that we are in severe drought status... the area of severe drought is getting bigger... the forecaster was saying that if you go back to last Sept... the below average rainfall is more like 8 inches plus........ for an area that gets an average 3-4 inches a month... 36-45 inches a year... this is serious, serious stuff.....
And calling for upper 80's and lower 90's Tues/Wed next week. MAYBE RAIN by the weekend...

So I go back to the farm in the morning... do the computer work... then come home. I will have to haul a couple of barrels of water to snyder's for the cows and calves, and the steer, in the pen. DS is supposed to give them the tubs of silage... I can let the cows out tomorrow, but the steer stays in and he needs water... They have enough hay for a day or 2.... and once that steer is gone, I am going to start letting the calves out with the cows... I think they will want to come back in for grain... and this evening, I saw the jersey steer stealing off the jersey heifer along with her calf.. so the 3 are sucking the 2 cows.. which is fine. I want to keep them milking good until we are done calving ... in case of another set of twins or something... make sure I have some "teats available" if I need them.

DS just called.. there were some calves out...he got a call....of course he was down at her house... I went over, one in the catch field and 2 down the dirt road... have no idea where they got out... if they were on the main road and then went down the dirt road.... got out behind the neighbor's house as some fence there can be iffy but I thought he had fixed it.... and came down the paved road a couple hundred feet; or got out through the wire they are going to replace along the dirt road????? ... so I got them back up the dirt road, into the catch lot... went to the back corner and got that gate open a little... finally got 2 to go through the small opened gate... then had to get the other one... one cow was coming through but I got her to go back and got the calf out with her. Called DS back and told him and he said he would look into it in the morning... Told him I was going to bed so I could go to work in the morning... Have to be up at 4 or so to be at the barn by 5:15 to test their 2nd milking.
Once they start, they become a problem... I do not know how much hay they have left from the 2 rolls he fed them yesterday.... they want grass... and this fence along the road is abysmal.....that's why it is going to get replaced... we moved the one that was out all the time, and that stopped it .... but now these others are starting. He can figure it out in the morning...

I'm going to get a shower and go to bed.

For real! I’m late to the party as always, but Ivm got rid of my skin cancer. They cut out one area where it had been anyway to check for cells underneath and all cancer cells were gone. I also think getting over C-vid in just 3 days was pretty huge, considering my suppressed immune system. I had purchased pills inline for Randy, Cody and I. I wish we had tried something like it when my SIL had leukemia. Maybe it would have helped.

I'm so glad to read about your great results!

Warmer morning... was 40 overnight. Sun is out and the air warmed fast. Tested cows, and came on home after getting the meters loaded in the car after doing the computer work.

Went to the co-op and got the one bucket of staples...40 lbs.... 1 1/2 inch long... $92,99.... they have some 1 1/4 inch ones... and was thinking that maybe I ought to get some of them... My wire won't have near the "pressure" against it and they ought to be fine to use... or maybe use in between the little bit longer ones. They were still cheaper than Rural King's price... Next time they get more, they will surely be up ALOT.... Got the new wiper blade on the back of the outback while I was there... then noticed that gas had gone up another $.10 to 4.09 at the stations there;... so came back up the road 5 miles and filled the outback for $3.79 (3.64 with my shell cc) and then took the explorer down and filled it also since we will take it Monday to the dr appt ..... if it goes up AGAIN.... at least I will be a little ahead.
They came and filled the propane today too... $3,59 a gal I think it was... but should not use near so much as it gets warmer and won't need the heater...

Time to go in and get the samples packed...so they can go out UPS sometime today. I finally made a late breakfast of fried eggs and just got done a bit ago. I will probably see about going out and finish picking up some of the sticks and stuff out of the tree... and prune back some of the roses ... all that "burnable" stuff will go on that pile to get burned... but not going to happen until after we get some rain... Even with less wind.... it is just too dry to take a chance.
I need to run the mower and get things mowed down.... and get the weed eater out and get things trimmed down along the edges. Spring mowing season has started earlier than ever....

Need to check/fill chicken feeders and waterers... and haul a load of water to the pen at snyder's so the steer has plenty to drink before getting on the trailer to get sold tomorrow.

No water/rain/moisture in the forecast until NEXT Friday/Saturday... then only a 20-30% chance.

Have not talked to DS or seen any of the cows next door at Grants...... but they ate all the hay..... they are probably down over the hill in the back trying to find a few blades of grass...

Thinking alike. Gas dropped from $3.99 to $3.69 at Wawa. DS just came in from running errands, announced that he'd topped off the car he was driving, was switching to the Camry to take it back to Wawa, to top it off.

The training progresses...
:D =D
