Farmerjan's journal - Weather

We had .15 inches ... so just enough to wash the pollen off the tree leaves and get the grass wet on top.
Sun is coming out, partly clouds, but the rain chances are gone... east and north... breezy so it'll be sucked up by the evening. 10% chance passing shower on Wed... but really nothing until maybe next weekend...
This is NOT GOOD....
Same here, basically, my rain gauge was dry.

I drive past many farmers' fields on my route to church. One was planted, tiny green sprouts were probably corn. Most fields weren't plowed, covered with winter weeds, possibly waiting for rain. The couple fields I saw plowed were losing soil in the wind gusts prior to the rain (not) arrival. Made me think of a Dust Bowl. :hu

I watched a clip of Glen Beck yesterday where he said we are in some serious trouble, 60% of the United States is in drought. Think food. If ever there was a good time to plant a garden, this is it. Y'all ponder on that. If all you have is a few flower beds, stick some squash plants in there or some beans, anything that can help in feeding yourself. It might be a good time to stock up on staples before we really do suffer from a drought. Load your freezer with all the meat that you can afford. Repackage it in vacuum sealed bags and it will keep for several years. Watch the sales and buy whatever you can afford.

I pickled another jar of 9 eggs last night. They will last for months in the refrigerator. Any eggs that get older than 3 weeks get hardboiled, refrigerated, and fed back to the flock if I can't eat them fast enough.

I know about waterglassing, not trying it at this time. I also have dozens of cans of fruit, vegetables, etc. in my shed, expired about 3 years ago. If they bulge I'll toss them.

I've been preaching this...things will get worse with prices & availability. It's comforting to have your food available. Pretty necessary, too :D =D Those who are associated with farming see it -- the city dwellers don't even think it's happening until shelves get bare. 🤷 Then, panic buy. Sad.

CHILLY start... down to 38 overnight... Supposed to be colder tonight... frost/freeze warning up. We get a breeze here so frost does not settle as fast... Sun is out so will warm nicely. Hope to be comfortable to work outside in a bit.

Got this week kinda put together... Testing Tues and Wed aft... Bulls BSE exams on Wed... I will help DS load 2 in the morning, and then 2 more for the afternoon and then go to test. I called DHIA and told them I was unavailable to do the zoom meeting... they will tape it and will send it to me in email and then I will answer some questions and that will be it... do it on my preferred time...
Farm is having the hoof trimmer on Friday morning... not Thursday... and will be there with Maggie - older nurse cow- at 9 a.m.
Called vet and Monday 27th, will work for him... 2 pm for preg check of these cows we moved from Grants... get them done and out of the way and moved away from the barn for the ones to come from VT... leaving there on Tuesday 28th, I think. Not sure when DS is thinking of taking these few "bigger" calves off the cows to sell...

Soaked jeans done and 2nd load almost done, will go out on the line shortly.

Samples packed and ready for UPS.

Incubator is holding temp good... eggs set... I have some for the langshan... but was kinda hoping she might quit setting now, and lay some more, then set again in a month or 2... we'll see.. I need to find a place to set her or put the eggs in the inc this evening.

Got to go to snyder's and feed... make sure I can get the cow back in since they are enjoying being out with the calves. and not having to haul water is a plus since there is not enough rain to put any in the troughs. Will need to get her in on Thursday to be able to load and take her to the hoof trimmer at the farm Friday Morning...

Maybe mow the lawn and do more weed eating? Need to do some major lawn cleanup. Still have the sticks and stuff in the cart, but no burning before 4 pm in VA; plus with the dry conditions I would not think about burning now. Maybe next weekend if we get the forecast showers?
Also, have to cut the hose where it is leaking and put new ends on both cut ends so I can use it and have a shorter piece for flexibility.... sometimes need shorter pieces when I used the soaker hoses in the garden ..... and not "water" the walkway areas....looks like this might be a year for some watering if things do not improve with mother nature watering the ground herself....

Clothes done, ready to go out with them.

I waterglassed eggs and started a thread about it on BYC. It works, but I would only do it if I didn't have refrigeration. Some people are still posting on the thread.

AND it is seeping water AGAIN on the way home... something very wrong somewhere...
Hoses? or a washer? Something simple and cheap :fl
can't take things like Zyrtec and other allergy remedies as they are bovine derived... so will have to read the labels even closer...
My allergies have ben bad here in CA. I kept thinking I was getting another cold but it seems to be just allergies. I want to go home.
Did not get as much done as planned... but there is ALWAYS something on the list... so cross off and add more..
Every time I get out my list and cross off several things, I think of more that MUST be added . . . .
:barnie

Took the mower and run it out to the chicken pens, so I don't trip in the long grass... and then mowed out to the clothesline and just "squared up" the paths. Then put it in the carport... I only had 1 battery in it and so ran it down...
We need a lawn mower. What is the one that you got that yoi like so much? And where did you order it from? I told DH not to buy anything until we checked with you since I know you love yours. He has trouble with his knees so needs one tht he doesnt sit down in too far.
