Female with likely UTI

Just curious how common it is for female llamas to get urinary tract infections? I'm pretty sure my 3 year old has one......she has discharge around her vulva.....probably crystals as well. I'm going to try and get a urine sample to the vet........If I can catch her in the act of going! :/ Otherwise I guess I'll have to take her in........she won't like that.

I haven't seen too many UTI in alpacas or llamas. It is certainly possible. Could she have a uterine infection? You will see a discharge if she has a uterine infection too. Is she urinating frequently but little urine output? That would be the telltale sign that it is UTI. Another thing it could be is a bladder infection if she is urinating frequently. It would probably be best to have a vet diagnose it as different drugs would be used for the different infections.

I did get a urine sample for the Vet. She does have some crystals, but he said that they were normal for her PH level and other wise the urine looked fine. So possibly a vaginal infection causing the discharge.

I would also consider a uterine infection. That is what it usually is. If it is a uterine infection, a course of long acting penicillin and estrumate should take care of it. What my vet usually has me do is 3 penicillin shots, every other day at 4cc per 100 lbs and 2 days in a row of estrumate. For alpacas we usually just do 1cc of estrumate but not sure if you would do more for a llama. You can do the 2 days in a row of estrumate at any time during the course of the LA penicillin.
