I have one of my does at a friends house, she was there initially so this friend could help me get her trained to the milk stand for milking after her kids died at birth/were born dead. Well she has been housed with a boar/toggenburg kid for the last month or so. We ended up opting to dry her off as her milk production was low and it had been her first kidding. That was until we realized the kid she was housed with had been nursing off her. At that point we decided to leave her with the kid until this friend of mine sold her, as she needed a companion and my goat at the time did as well (at that time I was in the process of selling my sheep and purchasing another goat to keep mine with). Well today my friend called and their kid who was about 12 weeks old I think, died this morning, they have no idea why.

They said she had seemed lethargic yesterday and this morning was dead. So now I am in a bit if a pickle, I can obviously go pick up my goat anytime since she is no longer needed there. But I am hesitant to do so as I have a mom and 1 week old twin kids here. Should I leave her there a couple days and see if she starts acting sick? Or should I bring her home right away and treat her for something? Shes going to need to be milked now that no kid is on her, but my friend will step in and do that temporarily for me. What do you think is the best way to handle this? She would be housed alone there for the next few days if she stays. But if she comes home I dont have any isolation area to put her in so she would have to go right in with the rest of my herd.

I'm sad for my friend they were very attached to this kid and she was very friendly and sweet, they are very knowledgeable about goats and can think of no reason she would just die like that. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Unless there was a way to quarantine the new goat, I'd have to wait and see.

I hate to always throw the "Coccidiosis" flag out there, but....you don't say if she was doing any type of cocci prevention or mention deworming or vaccination status.

My 1st guess would be cocci if a 12 wk old kid was 'lethargic' one day and dead the next. Or it could have been worms. Or it could have been lots of other things. But my best guess is cocci.

she hadnt dewormed yet, we had just talked about that the other day cause I was deworming my goats, I'm not sure on vaccinating. If it is cocci, is that a concern for my 2 year old doe who was housed with her? If so how long should I leave her at their house and watch for it before bringing her home?

All goats have a certain level of cocci in their system. Younger kids are more acceptable to cocci blooms and heavy load.

The 2 things i could think up that it would be are #1 selenium deficiancy and #2 pneumonia
I had 2 friends who had selenium deficiancy in there goats. The first is a big dairy producer, she lost 90% of her goats due to this. after 2 vets and a proffesional who did NOT diagnose this (even though she ended up paying them for nothing :somad ). she ended up asking an old friend/raiser who told her. she started giving BoSe and hasn't had problems since. u can get this at almost any vet or fleet farm. its cheep and you only have to give about 3 dosages in the goats life time. the other friend lost quiet a few too. the way they described it was they'de be up and healthy one feeding the next they'de be down and within a few hours dead.

bad pneumonia also kills within a few days. was she coughing at all, or had rattly breathing? if so then that might have been it. most forms are contagious and kill fast. yet another friend of mine lost most of there herd to this within a matter of days (i have some lucky friends huh?)
