So, new to goats and trying to understand the whole American %.
The only way to increase a ADGA % to American, is to breed say the 50% to a PB? And increase status over generation?
You cannot breed a 50% to a 50% and get an American, correct? It would decrease the %?
It's all slightly confusing and not a whole lot of literature!! I will have Nubians.
Thanks!

you are correct, 50% bred to pb is 75%, 75% bred to pb is 7/8 which is considered an American. you can breed an American to a pb till the cows come home and the kids will still be an American never get to pb status. americans can be shown with the pb's but the 75% and under will be recorded grades there are a lot of American goats out there that are wonderful animals. hope you enjoy your Nubians when you get them

Thank you!! It's kind of confusing at first. Trying to understand it all :) I will be getting PB and ADGA 50%. That way I have PB and can work up to American with the others. Be a fun breeding project ^_^ I'm so looking forward to it!

it does kind of make you shake your head and go whhhatt. and yup, it will be fun. be sure to post pictures when you get them. what are you going to do with the milk and kids. also please be sure your girls are tested for CAE, CL, Johnes and G6S to keep you from having a lot of heart ache and sick goats later. good luck

We are going to keep milk for us and family. I also want to learn how to do butter, cheese, and soaps.
The kids I plan on selling and/or keeping to improve lines. Looking to do our first ADGA show as Jr. Does this summer. Any males we can't home, will go to the freezer.
They are all coming to me free of CAE, CL, and Johnes. She doesnt test for G6S, but I am going to because you just never know!
After what I have learned from chickens, very hard lessons...my goats are going to be a closed herd.

@goatgurl isn't the herdbook closed as far as Nubians cannot go past American. They cannot move up to PB status in other words.
I know with Lamanchas it's open so you can.

I think the stigma of American vs Purebred with the Nubians has changed. We see a lot of experimentals and a lot of Americans.

honestly SBC I don't know about Nubians or lamanchas either for that matter so I wouldn't swear either way. i'll have to look it up.
sounds like you have this under control Rella. and just my opinion but I think 98% of boy goats should go to freezer camp. we don't need a buck for every doe in the world. check on this forum for cheese and soap info. you should find it helpful.
