Hi everyone, I'm Suzanne, aka Zan (or just Z).
I'm so glad I found this community! I think I'm probably a stereotype - city girl who's always dreamed of living off the land, but has NO idea what that actually looks like.

My husband and I left Atlanta and moved onto a 5 1/2 acre homestead in the SW mountains of North Carolina in the fall of 2023, and after a year of raising chickens and ducks (and a mostly failed garden), we've landed head-first into goats.
We've started out with six - 2 bucklings and 4 doelings, all between 2 1/2 - 4 months old.

In the 6 short weeks we've had them, I've had to learn things I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd need to know, but the most important things I've learned are humility and the importance of community, and that's how I found my way here.

Welcome! Glad you found us and we are thrilled to have you posting.

Yes moving from the city to the country is not quite as bad as "Green Acres" would have one think, nevertheless it is a change. My DH and I both saw our first cow in a zoo, talk about city slickers. About 20+ years ago we started with chickens, the gateway animal, then rabbits, then wee goaties, and ducks. Along the way we have had various dogs and right now have German Shepherds. Where we are located we are more in need of a human guardian dog than a livestock guardian dog.

Do not hesitate to ask anything, and I sincerely mean anything as all of us started somewhere from scratch, made mistakes, accidently made good choices and generally muddled through otherwise. Ask! If you don't understand ask again. Keep asking until you do understand.

So in the mean while, take a seat... just toss that pup out of the seat, put your feet up and stay a spell.

Welcome from So Cal! You've landed in the best place online. Just sheep and working/herding dogs here.
Goats are so cute and tempting, then I read of their adventures and I'm cured of the cuteness for awhile.

East Texas giving a shout out! I raise Latahdin hair sheep, have 2 Anatolian guardians and my farm dog is half Labrador and half Great Dane. I’m not as old as @Mini Horses dirt, but my dirt is getting pretty old too.
Check out our sister site the easy garden, link is at bottom of the page.

My Daddy was an organic gardener before it was cool. I was raised up gardening. I’ll be glad to answer questions.
