Homemade carders for wool?

Well, this fleece came to me by sheer sweetness from a friend and its not exactly meant for any kind of wool project of mine. I don't really mean to spend any money developing it...we SSers like to do things on the cheap if we can! :p

I will either use it for throw pillows or for batting inside a small quilt. Nothing major or anything that would warrant a big outlay of monies.

This fleece has a lot of debris in it, despite two washings. I find it impossible to pick out all the hay and straw particles in the present form, will this be easier as I card the wool or will this just entangle them further and should be done before carding?
It should take out a majority of the big stuff. Some of the wool I felt with still has VM (vegetable matter) in it, but it's not a huge deal.
