I would talk to local goat breeders who show goats. I don't show so have no idea. I would also suggest going to as many local shows as possible. AGS and ADGA should have a show schedule somewhere on their website.

Do you have a local 4-H group you could work with? They should teach you what you need to know to get started.

But each club should have a goat advisor ... or the extension office will know of a good one. Find somebody that shows dairy and have them train you. A mentor to help you through the bumps and bruises ... you need a set of clippers and a 10 blade also! All dairy goats are shaved ... all the coat is gone. And the utter region is done with a 30 or 40 blade. Even the little ladies!

the goat needs to be washed and clipped before the show. You will need equipement for this. so You will need to purchase your own, or get help.

the goat needs to be trained to lead and to set up, with all 4 feet square and the back feet a little bit stretched out.

Proper feeding is essential, a show goat feed will help your goat look healthy.

The extension office may be able to advice you or take your number and give it to someone in the area that may be willing to work with.
Our 4H club doesn't show just goats, but there are plenty of people that know what they are doing with in the club.

You just need to start calling and asking around, to find someone that will be willing to give a little time to help you.

Keep researching and reading on-line. Look at how the goats are set up in the pictures. The collar/chain is up close under their chin, your hand should be like a post above the goats head, helping to lift the goats head and then you reach around and set the legs in position. Each step takes practice, the goat isn't going to do everything the first day.

Here is a good video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pj6E9U9QORo

Eited to add: he girls need to keep the chains up better, when you allow the chain to come down the animal will start moving around. But the video does a good job overall, explaining some basics and showing how the dairy goat should be clipped.

This is a meat market show, but it does a good job explaining head and leg position. Not all judges would want you to lift up on the front of the goat, you should just pick up a front leg and set it in position, if you need to. The ending is obnoxious. But none the less, the video getst he point across.

again, some ideas for you, but the people are beginners and are just learnign, they aren't keeping a steady even pressure up on the chain, so when the girl in the pink shirt sets up her goats front legs and then goes to set up the goats back legs the goat moves. But is a good example of how to position the legs.
