Not recomended, the best thing to do is get a vet to do it surgically.

Llamas shouldn't be gelded before 2 years old. They need the hormones for proper bone growth. So they really would be too old to band. It is best to have them surgically gelded.

Yes, but look how young they spay/neuter dogs and cats and goats are banded at 8-12 weeks old. I will say that alpacas/llamas are especially affected by it. I know this from personal experience. I was brand new in camelids and didn't know better. I had my 2 llamas gelded at 1 year of age. The one llama did ok but did have longer/narrower leg bones but the other llama ended up breaking his leg badly from just running and had to be put down. The vet said that the bones were just too thin from gelding too early. I was devastated that I had caused that. Ever since then, I have made sure that people know what can happen if they geld too early.
