I found my grandfather's old fence charger. He used it around his yard in town to keep the dogs in and strangers out. As I remember it shocked the pee water out of me, but I was pre double digits the last time that happened. I can't find a manual online and Sears was less than helpful. They do not have it listed anywhere on their site of old manuals. I'm curious to know if I can use a volt meter to determine joules? I'm not a savvy electric type, dad is though. What should I be looking for amp, watt, volt, joules to keep predators out and goats in?

I've used old fence chargers and they work.

There are fence charger testers that will tell you the power.

Or you could set it up and touch it to see if you pee!

You beat me to it! I was going to say to plug it in and touch the wire to see if it's working! :gig

Do not attempt to test this fence charger with a voltmeter--at the very least, you will fry the tester's fuse. I'm not aware of anything other than math that can determine joules, since it is a product derived from energy output (watts) over a period of time (seconds) joules = watts × seconds. It's one of the old weed burners that were popular (and dangerous) in the 50s and 60s--More than likely, it is always on--no pulse and not a low impedance energizer. Something gets hung up in a fence using one of those type energizers and they can get seriously injured.

If it is the type that greybeard says that it is I personally wouldn't even use it.
