Hello!
I just joined BYH and I’m really excited to meet everyone on here!
I am just going to tell y’all a bit about myself.
I live in the Appalachian mountains in NC. I currently have 35 chickens (that I love) and I am a active member of BYC. I have one dog, a beautiful Weimaraner named Blue, and I have 3 cats. I am hoping to get some little Nigerian dwarf goats or pigmy goats. I have a fenced in area big enough for about 15 miniature goats.
I really hope to learn about caring for goats and expand my little homestead! :)

Thank you!
I want them as pets, but if I breed them and get a bit of milk on the side to try, I would be happy. I’ve never had goat milk before, only goat cheese, so I’m not sure if I even like it. I would never use them for meat. I’m so excited to get goats!! I have a pen ready for them and I’m keeping my eye out for a shed that I could turn into the goat house. ( I don’t really know what that would be called?). And if I can’t find one I’ll try to see if I can build something.
I have a question though, I live where rhododendron grows wild. Not Azelas, but Catawba hybrid rhododendron. I have researched if they are toxic to goats, but only azaleas come up. Do you know if I should worry about those? People raise goats areound here, but I don’t know if they clear the rhododendron bushes before getting the goats or not.
Thanks!

Greetings and welcome to BYH! So glad you joined us. Goats are great, I'm sure once you get a few you'll become a goat addict ;) As for the plant issue, it IS listed here as poisonous: http://poisonousplants.ansci.cornell.edu/goatlist.html

There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. I recommend at least your state as most folks won't be able to figure out where if you put anything more specific (county, town, street, etc) by itself. Old folks like me will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

Welcome from the mountains of SWVA! BYHers love to meet new people :) As latestarter said, our "rhodies" that grow crazy here, domestic varieties in backyards and wild varieties all over the woods, are all very toxic to goats and should ideally be cut down if you have them grazing that area.

We would love to see photos of our current chickens! And wish you luck with your future goaties.

Ok. Thank you! The rhododendron grow over the pen they would live in, so we should probably take them out. I just hope the leaves aren’t in the pen. I think clearing them would be good anyways because the pen would get more sunlight.
Here’s a some pictures of my chickens. They are so sweet! (Sorry for so many pictures:hide)
