AI with sheep isn't as simple as it is with cows and other such animals. It must be done by a vet and involves incisions and such. It is quite the procedure actually.

The next step i would consider is finding a breed that is common in your area that you wouldn't mind crossing with your Katahdins. It can be very difficult in this disease conscious world to even find a breeder who will allow you to bring in ewes to breed to their rams, so be prepared to be turned down by some people.

If there are any rams for sale near you that aren't too expensive you may consider purchasing a ram to use for the season and then reselling him at the end of breeding season.

I had the same problem finding a ram and I finally ended up having to buy one. It is so far seeming easier than using someone else's ram. I am waiting until late September to breed, so it is nice being able to wait and breed whenever my ewe is ready and when it suites the weather patterns.
