Hi all,

Just made my first mozzarella today - turned out pretty good I think :) Question...what do you all do with all of that leftover whey? I saw that someone added their buttermilk culture to make their own buttermilk but I don't have any of that.

I made an herbed whey cheese with ours and we put it on salads. You don't have to add in additional milk but it does make a difference in how much you get our of it.

We empty our whey (1-2 gallons) into a large pot and then heat it to 195 degrees (be careful to not boil itand gently stir the bottom to make sure it doesn't stick). As soon as you start to see bits of curd, turn off the heat and let it set for 8-10 minutes. Drain the whey off into a lined colander and let it drip for 15 minutes or so. We then put it into a tupperware dish with some salt and herbs and it is good to go.

My Mom used it on us girl's hair for a rinse... :sick

It was then rinsed out well...but I still think that the flies were near our hair more than they should be.

Eww. Was it supposed to be good for you hair or something? I've heard of all kinds of rinses from Grandma before (coffee, vinegar), just not whey. :p
