Ok, I hope this is nothing and just our llama settling in even more.

We got "Jerry" in September 2010 and he was very skittish to everyone except me. That didn't mean that I could get anymore than within arms length though. He was extremely skittish of men since the husband at his previous home would wallop him with a broom handle if he got out of line (in his opinion). He even kicked my DH when he thought he was too close back in December.

Jerry has gradually come around and stopped flinching anytime my DH would walk into the barn (yeah it was that bad). And got to the point that I could put my arm around his neck with no problem or stand and pet him with out him trying to run away.

Fast forward to today and what concerns me:
When I went to the barn to water this morning he was "lounging" on the ground. That in and of itself is nothing new. But when I approached he didn't get up. I got down on my knees and was talking to him. I gave him a hug (cheek to cheek) and even a kiss and still he stayed "kushed" down. Only when my DH brought in hay did Jerry jump up and go over to eat. He's even letting DH pet him today.

His complete willingness to allow us to show him affection today is what concerns me. The abrupt behavior change. I'm not complaining, mind you, I'm just concerned.

He is eating and drinking normal. Pooing and peeing is normal.

Should I be concerned by his behavior shift or am I just being cautious?

Thank you

eta: That's Jerry in my avatar. I'd just brushed my teeth and he was sniffing my breath. Kind of freaked me out because he'd never gotten so close before. That was about a month ago. DH snapped the photo with his phone.

If there are no other signs, then I would just keep an eye on him. I understand what you mean about the abrupt change in behavior but since there are no other signs, I guess only time will tell.

Thanks. Again I'm not complaining, I love showering my critters with affection. But I know that llamas tend to be standoffish, so I never expected that he would be super close to us. But today, was just kind of bizarre. I'll keep an eye on him. (and keep showering him with love for as long as he lets me) :D
