Heat loss costs money in feed and the Galloway breed fare pretty well in the cold weather which helps them keep their condition.
Because of the 2 layers of hair there is very little heat loss. The insulation layer is covered over with long shaggy hair which keeps the rain and snow out.
With heat loss you will find very little snow or frost sticking to cattle - see pics below which shows the cattle with snow and frost on the coats, the other advantage is these breeds dont need to put on a layer of fat to keep the cold out. Win Win
