Let me start by saying that I know pretty much nothing about milking machines or how they work, so feel free to tell me i'm crazy!

I have a free air compressor I can use, but is it suitable for the purpose? It's a Dayton Speedaire, 3HP. I'd want to milk a pair of goats or a single cow.

An air compressor creates air. A vacuum pump creates a vacuum (takes the air away). Unless you can reverse the motor to create a vacuum instead of air it won't work.

I have heard of someone who used a shop vac for the vacuum.

Remember you need pulsation to go with the vacuum or you would just be sucking on the cow/goats teats and not working the teats to get the milk out.

Check out portablemilkers.com or google surge milker. That will give you a good starting point on single cow milkers.
