No sure. But thinking slow, maybe pressured delivery. She wasn't as active as most when I found them. Then lost. She had nursed, etc. Lethargic tho. One of those mysteries
Had a huge lamb born from a young ewe one year (bought her accidently bred). Couldn't stand to nurse but vocal. Bright orange showing a hard birth. LGDs very upset by his cries. Drank from a bottle ok but finally had him euthanized. Neurologic damage from hard birth.
Soooo. Home early, 3ish. My body decided on a catnap. About half HR later, looking out back door, I see Trouble by the barn, alone. Pacing, up & down a couple times...she was ready to kid, I knew from morning check. Figured she'll have it there. About 4 I go out to feed, she comes there as usual. I see a goop strip, think yep won't be long. Filled front troughs, getting together to take hay to back & some kids in the barn start screaming -- momas had left them to go eat so they come bounding out. BUT when they screamed, Trouble stopped, called back & headed to her spot...knowing that's strange went & found a single boy. Weak, couldn't stand. No idea how long since born. Thankfully it wasn't cold today & his mouth wasn't cold. She was by me & I checked...both teats had plugs, so I fixed that & ran inside for a syringe. Trouble was a bottled triplet. Very tame.
So before all this, I had cut up chicken breasts & put 7 qts in canner -- which was heating, almost at steam. Ran back out, milked some into syringe & gave a couple to kid. I wrapped him & left with mom. Back in to check canner. Back out to babe, back to canner...wash & repeat. Canner at temp, out to feed more. About 3rd trip, I'm holding kid up to nurse. Wrap him. Back in -- back out. About every half hr. He's doing a little better, tries to stand as I hold him up to nurse. Bumping udder now, too. It's gonna be a long night. I sure want him to be his mommas, not a bottle kid. She's talking & licking him. Not sure how long he'd been delivered but certainly weak when found. In fact, when first seen I thought he was dead. Nope, responded when touched. We're giving it a hard try!!
And not much sleep. But you know the feelings! This morn he's wanting to nurse. Just having a hard time coordinating that you need to open your mouth to get that teat in it can't get up alone yet but can stand once up. Not walking. Hoping that resolved with more nutrition. Taking some selenium/vit E for a dab in his mouth.nVery frustrating. I'm getting a cup of coffee for reinforcement, then going back out to milk Trouble. Have a hand milker to use. Great udder but the tiniest teats. 2 finger models. Good thing she's super spoiled tame! Maybe. Still in mode.
