My mini horse Harley went to the vet 4 days ago for rectal prolapse. The vet called me with bad news this morning.....he said no matter what he does Charley's condition is deteriorating. He said we need to start considering euthenasia!!!! Omg....what do I do??? Has anyone else experianced this? Ive heard that most horses overcome this. So confused.

i haven't personally had to go through this, thank goodness. But I would expect that if your vet has held him together for four days and is now recommending euthanasia, it must be pretty bad. Is this an equine vet, if not, you could ask him for a referral to a specialists and at least get a second opinion.

i have had lots of animals all my life and have learned the hard way, causing much suffering of those i loved along the way, that there comes a time when no matter how hard it is, that giving them a peaceful end truly is the best way to thank them for a lifetime of love. *tears* to you and yours during this hard time if it comes to that.

I have to agree. Do you trust your vet? It is never an easy decision. But if your vet is making the recommendation, it may be time.

Well....Harley came home from the vet yesterday! Thank goodness we didn't have him euthanized! We didn't want to give up on him. The vet took a special interest in him and kept him for an additional week free of charge!!! Harley is making a slow but steady recovery:)
