New baby and question

Had a dwarf momma deliver yesterday. It was a breech birth and we found her with the baby's head out and almost dry. Not sure how long she had been like that. Legs were both straight back. We finally got her out after 30 minutes of pushing and pulling.

Today both mom and baby seem fine but mom is very very swollen. How swollen is normal and is there anything to do?

Glad that the doe and kid are doing well and congrats on the baby. I have had some very very swollen, just depends on how difficult the birth is. I have never done anything to treat the swelling but I have a friend that uses Arnica cream. You can usually find it at a health food store and some pharmacies.

I think I would let nature take its course. I would monitor her temp though and be on the look out for infection. Animals are pretty resilient.

I'm not sure if this is the same, but after my cow Violet freshened for the first time, she was very swollen in the backend. She had had a hard labor. She was way up in the front of our property when she went into labor (in the spring/summer/fall when there is green grass we bring our cows up front all day to eat) and after waiting and watching her for about an hour, it was time to bring the cows back to their pasture and we didn't want to leave her all alone up front - coyotes - so we led her all the way back - in between contractions where she would lay down and push every 4-5 minutes, with the calf's legs were showing - but after we got her back to the pasture and she had settled down for a few hours she had a nice healthy bull calf.
Anyway, as I said before she also had a very swollen backend but the swelling went down after a few days and she was fine.

Not sure if I said hello and welcome when you did your first post, so Welcome! Congrats on the new addition to your herd! Glad it all came out OK in the end. Hope mom, heals up well with no infection. Thanks for sharing the pics!

Congrats on the new additions. I'd take her temp and make sure she doesn't have an infection. If no fever, then I'd let nature do it's thing. A lot like us ladies after giving birth, it doesn't look quite right for a while

My doe kidded for the first time, afterwards she looked swollen and had bloody discharge for a week after. She did have an infection. I'd have never known if I didn't take the advice of @Southern by choice and @Goat Whisperer and get a temp on her. She was 106.2 Raging infection. I've learned that you can learn a lot from taking a temp! Goats do not like to let on that ANYTHING is wrong until it's too late. With a course of antibiotics she is healed up and looking like normal now, just took some time.
