Hello! Looking forward to learning more about our herd! We are celebrating our first year on this little 5.5 acre farm in upstate NY and are loving it! Our family of 3 moved into the new homestead in April 2017. We started our goat herd in June, sheep in August and moved our horse home from a boarding facility in Sept. Our current herd consists of: 1 Suffolk Ewe, 2 Tunis ewes, 2 Alpine/Oberhasli does, 1 Oberhasli X wether (he was supposed to be our first 4H auction goat, but it didn't work out so well. We bought him back!), a 6 week old Sable/Alpine doe kid (bottle baby), and 25 chickens. Oh ya...can't forget the dog! We have not started breeding any of them yet and are using them for 4H projects at this time. We get information from our other 4H members and local farmers, but it's nice to have contacts from all over the place - such a great resource of information! Thank you for adding us to this group!

Hello fellow upstate-New-Yorker and :welcome!
Sounds like you have a nice little homestead!
We don't have any goats or sheep, just 2 hens and 2 heifers and a dog.

Greetings and welcome to BYH! So glad you joined us. Sounds like you and your farm are off to a great start! There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. I recommend at least your state as most folks won't be able to figure out where if you put anything more specific (county, town, street, etc) by itself. Old folks like me will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

At the Saratoga County fair?
It's a start for us. DH wants to get some pigs too sometime down the road.
We show at the Schaghticoke Fair in Rensselaer County. When we joined 4H, our horse was with Rensselaer Co. folks (we live just across the river from the county borders), so we were able to join up with them. We absolutely love it and the opportunities we have been presented. Including hands on seminars at Cornell University! We have a Quarter horse who turns 16 on April 10th. My daughter has worked with Rocky for 6 years now and is finally able to get someone to help fine-tune him this summer. Trainers were outside our budget, so she learned by watching and asking tons of questions. She shows Western Pleasure (but the horse doesn't care for that kind of work. He doesnt pick up the correct lead most times.) However, he excels at trail and Gymkhana events. He also does great sorting cattle, roping, etc. He seems to be more of a farm horse, but she has fun with him. Our sheep got out and he was right there for her to rope the sheep and bring her back home. Kind of fun, as we are certainly not professionals!

20170910_155420.jpg This is her with Rocky last summer. She won her first Junior Reserve Championship at a local Gymkhana series. She was so excited that all her hard work over the years got her a first trophy.
