Hi! I am brand new to owning Nigerian dwarf goats! I just got my first one who is 8 weeks old and will pick up our other one in just a few weeks. Both are females . My question is about feed. I have heard different options from different people. Most say to buy the medicated goat feed and then others say non medicated?? Which is best and any other tips welcomed! (When to deworming, how often, do they need vitamins or are there vitamins in their feed etc) thanks!!

I believe the medication in the feed is for coccidia prevention?
I don't give medicated feed because we use another product for coccidia prevention with our kids. Also, you wouldn't want medication in the feed you give your milkers if you are going to use the milk.
But, for now it won't hurt anything giving them medicated feed.
Make sure they have free choice hay. Your location will influence the type of hay you feed. We mostly give bermuda (coastal variety).
You should have a loose mineral out for them.
We don't give any type of vitamin. But, your location may dictate you give supplementary copper and selenium.

Greetings and welcome to BYH Heather, from NE TX! So glad you joined us. Congrats on your new doeling(s)! Be awrae and take care... goats are addictive! :D =D There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. You'll get to "meet" folks at the same time. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Oh, and we all love pics, so post them anytime you feel the need! Please make yourself at home!

PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. I recommend at least your state as most folks won't be able to figure out where if you put anything more specific (county, town, street, etc) by itself. Old folks like me :old will never remember from this post & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!
