He was probably just too far gone before you found out what the problem was. You gave it a good shot, and at least you gave him a chance, from the sounds of things, he wouldn't have even had that if you hadn't taken him in.

Thank you all for your kind words. I didn't get many pictures of him while he was with us, but this was our Sammy. I miss the sweet little fella.
