Good evening homesteaders! I have a 6-month-old Nigerian Dwarf doe and a 1-year old Boer doe....at what age and weight can I breed my Nigerian Dwarf and Boer doe? I use them both for 4H and FFA! I will be using the Nigerian Dwarf as a breeder, milker, and shower...I will be keeping a doe off of her and selling the rest to future 4Hers or FFAers! Making a business!

I a using the Boer doe as a breeder, and shower...I will as well keep a doe off of her and use her kid's are wethers in 4H shows and sell the ones I do not need! Making a business off of her as well!

Just as above...my question was...what age and weight can I breed them both?

Thanks, homesteaders!

Hello!

First off, I would highly recommend joining The Goat Spot if you have any goat related questions. Everyone there is very, very nice, helpful, and knowledgeable. I myself am a member there and really enjoy connecting with with other goat lovers!

I raise and breed Nigerian Dwarfs and this is my advice and what I go by when deciding if I should breed a doe or not. Everyone has their own, different opinions on this. ;)

I (usually) breed at a minimum of 8 months of age and 40-45lbs. Keep in mind this is for NDs only. Other things you have to considering is width, depth, and overall heath of the goat. You should also go with your gut. If you feel a doe is too small to breed at 8 months of age, she probably is.

Blue Cactus Dairy Goats (on YouTube) raises NDs and she has some great videos showing and explaining when you should breed a doe, how to tell if she's wide enough, etc. Check her out - she's awesome!

I don't have any experience with Boers, but I'm thinking around a minimum of 8 months and 80lbs.

Again, I really encourage you to join The Goat Spot. You will definitely get a lot more advice and some input on Boers.

Hope this helps!

Close to a year of age, and good and healthy, are great times to breed.
