Loving the herd life
So I caught a big black snake coming out of the chicken house yesterday.
I have two broody hens and each time a chick hatches, I find the poor thing dead after a few hours. And I've noticed my egg production drop off but just a little bit. I thought it might be the heat. Not so!
This poor fella was terminated. I hate to do that but when I find them in the chicken house, they have to go. Otherwise, they can live here, no problem. They are helpful with other pests and dangerous snakes.
It was over 5 feet long but thin. The one I found in the front yard was very fat. And the guy driving the tractor moving dirt ran over one that was 'fat as a log'. He said it crawled off after he ran over it so he was hopeful it didn't die.
So these guys can be a friend and helpful farm occupant but when they start hindering... well, everyone has a job. They need to stay on the right side of that line. Crossing it makes them a pest.
