Do alpacas need another of their kind to thrive? Thinking of getting one. He is male, intact, 11 years old. I currently do not have another herd animal. Just muscovies, chickens, and geese, a dog, cat, and us (two adults). He's being sold as a pet.

I wouldn't recommend keeping an intact male anything as a pet. The hormonal urges can make them erratically dangerous.

Female or neutered males are better pet choices. And yes, you should have a pair of herd critters minimum.

Best to have herd, flock, group animals with others of their own kind. Get him another male.
Had a stud paca, nothing dangerous about him, but he wasn't raised as a puppy or spoiled pet. Even if you cut the balls off, if his personality is already to be a turd, it will stay a turd.
