I have been trying to research what people are using for their planted pig pasture(legume, grass, brassicas, grain). I am clearing some junk trees from our wooded area. I am trying to determine what others are using for such and area. The area would get 5-6 hours of full sun and is on heavier clay soil.
I would like to plant some alfalfa, rye grass, orchard grass, clover, and a little small grain. But I have also thought about adding a few rows of open pollinated corn, sunflowers, sugar beets that could be 'hogged' down later in the year. I have toyed with adding field peas, rape, kale, and orchard grass. My goal is to ease the feed bill. I have also heard of people using a fodder system but I am trying to keep the work load down.
My aim is to have a boar(Tamworth) and 2-3 sows(Old Spot and Tamworth) that can forage and thrive on/in our 1/2 acre wooded area.
Does anyone still 'ring' their hogs?
