Does anyone give lambs (especially bottle-babies) probiotics around weaning? I feel like my goats have done better with “Goats Prefer Probiotic Powder” at weaning or when sick (not used for “everyday” use). My little ewes are starting to nibble hay and pellets, and wondered if this would benefit them. If so, has anyone given “Goats Prefer” brand? No copper, of course.

Over here, probiotics are largely used in the newborn lamb in combination with artificial colostrum, vitamins and minerals.

Assuming that newborns have had colostrum and haven't had scours their gut flora should be reasonable. The rumen isn't fully developed until about 8 weeks in lambs, so they are not really capable of digesting solids in the same way as adult sheep until then.

I'd assume that probiotics would still be beneficial at weaning, but their use at this time isn't widely practised.
