Mallie is ANGRY! She gets very grouchy when she gets closer to lambing. She’s been in the stall since Wednesday evening and she is not pleased about it, but I have to work today and I’m not risking her being a turd and lambing way out in the field where I can’t see her.

I had to let Symphony out of the stall this morning because Mallie was being such a jerk yesterday. I gave them 2 piles of hay and Mallie proceeded to shove the 2nd pile across the stall and flip it upside down she could guard it from Symphony.

Mallie is due Monday, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she lambs today/this weekend. Her udder was a lot bigger yesterday, her belly has dropped, and there was a lot of pacing yesterday. And the anger. She didn’t finish her grain this morning and she’s normally a pig.

Mallie’s udder on Tuesday

Her udder today

I let her out while I was shearing today and that seems to have calmed her down. She’s back in the stall (by herself) now and is more relaxed. Really hoping she lambs tonight or tomorrow instead of when I’m at work on Monday or Tuesday.

Xena loves me.

Freesia found a bucket she can fit in. She’s doing much better. Normal appetite, no gross discharge.

I got a box of Pregnostix blood pregnancy tests to try out on a few of the questionable ewes. 2 lines is positive, 1 line is open.

#1 and #3 are two of the white Border Leicester ewes. #2 is Edith, a Shetland ewe, who didn’t look obviously bred when I sheared her. #4 and #5 are oopsie bred Shetland yearlings (bred to an unrelated ram this time), and #6 is Lise, a black Border Leicester, who was giving mixed signs.

NICE big barn 🄰

Are there plans for this wool? Missing your pics of processed wool and your awesome made products.

It’s not as big as it looks, but it is a huge step up from what I grew up raising sheep in so I’ll take it.

A lot of the wool was trashed. They are rough on their fleeces during the winter. Most of the sheep get sheared twice a year so the summer fleece is the better one. I kept back the good fleeces. I have a lot of ideas, but no solid plans yet.

Mallie lambed this morning. 8lb single black ram lamb with some white spots on his head.

I woke up at 3-something and checked the cameras. Nothing going on. Woke up again just before 6 and she was pushing. She popped him out at 0605 just before I walked into the barn. All I had to do was weigh him, dip his cord, give him a dose of ā€œBaby Lamb Strength,ā€ and check Mallie’s udder and I went back to bed. I checked the camera again just after 7 and he was already bouncing around the stall.

Oh, it’s currently 25 degrees. That’s what I love about the Shetlands. So tough.
