We are going to start fattening up our steer in the next couple of months and we bought some soybean meal from the fellow from whom we get our hay. Question: I know it is very high in protein and he should not get very much per day so how much should we feed him along with his grain and hay? One cup? One pound? Also, with the addition of the soybean meal how much grain should we give him?

FYI, he is almost 14 months old

Thanks for the help :)

How much does your steer weigh? What breed is he? What kind of hay are you feeding? What kind of grain are you feeding? We need information like this before we can make any kind of recommendation.

ok, here is a silly question -- how do you determine the weight of your steer? :p

Answers to your other questions Jhm47:

1. He is a polled Hereford
2. We feed him rye grass hay (we live in central MS)
3. The grain we give him is 12% sweet feed

What's his age? Approximately how tall is he at the withers? Can you see his ribs or backbone? I'd guess that you could safely start him on 1.5 # of soymeal. The hay is around 10%, and the sweet feed is only 12%, so 1.5 # would be good. If he's 800 - 1000 lbs, you could go up from there.

His is about 13 months old. Here is a picture we took of him April 17/11. How much grain should we feed him in addition to the soybean meal? Right now we have him at about 14lbs of grain a day.
